The 5 New Rules of Beauty

You know that heavy foundation and helmet hair are old-school, but the beauty world never stops evolving. And luckily, it's headed in a more natural, easier-to-master direction. (Hint: Cancel your color appointment and retire the contrasting lip liner.) Here, the latest ways to look your best.

Rule #1: Say Sayonara to Stiff Styles

"Take a look at today's it girls: Cameron Diaz, Kate Moss, Drew Barrymore," says Harry Josh, a celebrity stylist and Suave spokesperson. "They always leave their hair loose, wavy and unstyled, even when they're on the red carpet draped in Dior. They wouldn't go near a bottle of hairspray." In other words, kick the can: A softer, less traditionally "finished" 'do is sexiest now. For tantalizingly tousled tresses in a flash, slick a bit of gel or creme (if your hair is thick) through freshly washed locks and allow to air-dry. (Try Suave Naturals Aloe Vera Extra Hold Anti-Frizz Smoothing Gel or L'Oréal Professionnel Freshstyle Featherweightcreme.) Don't brush or touch hair while it's drying, or you'll induce frizz. If you feel that your hair lacks definition when dry, wrap ends in small sections around a medium-barrel curling iron for a few seconds each.

Rule #2: Let Your Roots Show...a Bit

"Exposing a reasonable amount of roots [we're talking up to an inch] is not only acceptable but enviable these days," says André Viveiros, lead colorist at Orlo, the trendy New York City salon. The rule goes hand in hand with the softly tousled tress trend (see Rule #1), Viveiros notes. "It's that low-key, high-maintenance thing. It should look like you don't spend a lot of time doing your hair ‑- even if you do." To this end, Viveiros has been advising clients with highlights to come in every two to three months, rather than every six weeks, for touch-ups. "Basically, you're after a slightly imperfect effect, similar to the way a kid's hair appears naturally lighter in random spots after a summer.

Rule #3: Lose the Overdone Lip Look

The desire for giant, pillowy lips is on the rise. "We live in an overtly sexual time, and nothing is considered more sensual than big lips," explains celebrity makeup artist Carol Shaw (exhibit A: Angelina Jolie). However, an obviously injected or seriously painted-on pout has become passé. So what's a volume-seeking girl to do? Step away from the dark lip liner; it will only serve to enclose your pout. Instead, opt for clear gloss (like LORAC's Lip Addiction, $17.50, which contains a cocktail of ingredients that revs up blood flow to the area and turns it a spicy shade of red), or a creamy lipstick that mimics the natural tone of your lips (on model: Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Cranberry Cream). As an all-natural alternative, break open a vitamin-E capsule and rub it over your mouth before bed. In the morning, lips will appear positively plush.

Rule #4: Try Shorter, Rounder Tips

We love the look of a perfect sheer manicure on long, tapered talons as much as the next woman, but let's face it: It takes time, patience and money to keep it up. For equally elegant, less fussy nails, go short, round and dark, suggests Julie Serquinia, owner of the Paint Shop salon in Beverly Hills (Mandy Moore, Beyoncé and Jada Pinkett Smith are regulars). To do: File your nails so they line up with the tips of your fingers (caveat: if you have long nail beds, leave a little extra length at the top). Round off the corners. Pick bluish-red or plum polishes if you have cool undertones in your skin and yellowish-red ones if your undertones are warm. Shown on nails: Essie in Berry Hard; (optional) white dots: OPI Nail Lacquer in Alpine Snow.

Rule #5: Never Leave Home sans a (Fake) Tan

A gorgeous glow ‑- on your face and body ‑- is no longer just a summer thing. It's an aesthetic we've come to covet year-round, and with good reason: A touch of color makes you look and feel instantly sexy and lets you get away with wearing less makeup. (Need proof? See Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez.) In response to the skin-tone warming trend, companies like CoverGirl have begun to include bronzers in their permanent lines instead of offering them only seasonally (try CoverGirl Tanfastic and Cheekers Bronzers). It's also finally possible to get a salonlike spray tan at home (try Nuress's Home Tanning Salon, $139.99; it could pass for the real deal). For an allover glow like this model's, smooth on Delux Beauty Liquid Bronze for face/body.

The Keys to Dry Skin Care

Dry skin isn’t the type of condition that just goes away on its own. It takes constant treatment and care to alleviate dry skin. Many people suffer from this skin condition and dealing with extreme temperatures and other environmental factors can be a nuisance. However, taking care of dry skin isn’t impossible. It merely requires a little know-how and some helpful tips.

In simple terms, dry skin is caused by lack of moisture. The skin contains a very protective and complex barrier made up of lipids (natural oils in the skin), sebum (oil) and natural moisturizing factors. This barrier is known as the hydro-lipid system. In addition to keeping the skin healthy by keeping necessary moisture levels intact, it also prevents bacteria, infection and other foreign substances from harming us. The problem with dry skin types is that this particular condition damages the hydro-lipid barrier. When this happens, a number of problems occur for the skin: increased moisture loss, dry and cracked skin, peeling, flaking and itchiness.

Dry skin can be inherited or affected by environmental factors, including extreme temperatures, air conditioning, heaters, and even contact dermatitis (coming into contact with substances that cause an allergic reaction - soaps, detergents, chemicals, etc).

Having dry skin is often troublesome because it requires training the skin to retain moisture and stay properly hydrated. The key is to rebuild the hydro-lipid system. Whether you suffer from acute or chronically dry skin, making certain changes in your lifestyle and in your skin care practices will better accommodate your delicate skin type and make life a lot easier for you.

Because dry skin can be aggravated easily, make it a point to read the labels of any product you buy in the store that your skin may come into contact with. This includes dishwashing soaps, laundry detergent, and perfume, to name a few. Many of the chemicals in these products can dry out your skin, which is the last thing you need if you already suffer from parched skin.

Hot water is a common factor that can cause dry skin. Only use lukewarm water and avoid taking long showers and baths. Being in the water for too long robs your skin of what little moisture it can hold onto. When it comes to your skin care products, only use the ones specially formulated for dry skin types.

Exfoliate dry, flaky skin but be gentle and don’t scrub too hard. Instead of rubbing your skin or face dry, use gentle pats and apply lotion while your skin is still damp, since this helps seal in moisture faster. Continue to drink water daily to provide your skin with proper hydration and try using a shielding lotion in place of regular lotion. Shielding lotions work with the skin to restore the hydro-lipid system and ensure that your skin receives the highest levels of moisture and hydration.

Use a humidifier to maintain an ideal environment where your skin won’t be dried out from too much air conditioning or heat.

Beauty Tools: What You Want and How to Find Them

There is a hidden treasure of beauty products and it’s probably not too far from where you’re already shopping. Beauty supply stores are often overlooked because they don’t seem trendy enough or because they have so many products that the novice has no idea where to start. The last may very well be true, but the first couldn’t be farther from it. In fact, many of the experts wouldn’t waster their time shopping anywhere else. Here’s why…

Hairstylists Jim Crawford and Nunzio Saviano say that they find their best buys and just what they want at beauty supply stores. They carry items that you will never find in drug stores or even in high end salons. The sales people are usually very knowledgeable about the products they carry and can often even repair your hair dryers and other electrical beauty tools.

Top picks for these guys are tourmaline and ceramic ion hair dryers. They are less harsh on your hair and don’t frizz hair like normal dryers do. Super heating curling and flat irons. They are ready to go in a snap and get hotter than normal irons. Of course, buyer, beware. Ask questions and lots of them before you buy products in beauty supply stores. The directions are often vague and the products often much stronger than store brands designed for at home use. Other beauty tools they love are metal-core Velcro rollers. These are hard to find, but so valuable as the metal heats when you set and then blow dry resulting great curls that set well and last. Another benefit to these stores is that they carry every imaginable hairclip, tie, twist and elastic know to man. You can find much better ponytail options at beauty supply stores.

When it comes to makeup and cosmetic tools, you’ll find more than you ever dreamed of in these small, unnoticed stores. Makeup artists buy items like non-latex sponges, which blend more evenly than latex, in bulk. They also love the wide variety of empty makeup cases that store all your makeup or just enough for a small touch up kit. You’ll find fake eyelashes in a variety that will make your head spin. More favs: glitter in every color and pencils in colors you’ve never even seen before. If you’ve always wanted to try sea foam green on your eyes, head to a beauty supply store. The products are often much less expensive and the variety is amazing. You’ll also find tools like brush cleaner, lash curlers and the perfect pair of tweezers. Perhaps the best thing about these stores is the brand you’ve never heard of that happens to be the best foundation, concealer or salt scrub you’ve ever used. The down side is that you can never be sure that what you loved this week will be on the shelf next time you’re shopping. If you see something you want to try, you’ve got to buy it.

Beauty Rules You Can Break

Rules are meant to be broken sometimes and makeup rules are no exception. Forget worrying about if you’re following the rules or not and break out of the mold. By always following the rulebook you may be missing out on some fun and out-of-the-box makeup looks. So stop being scared and learn how to experiment by doing exactly what you shouldn’t be doing.

Tweezing your eyebrows is a must for clean and sexy looking brows. However, you may or may not have heard of the makeup rule stating that you should never tweeze above your eyebrows. Whoever came up with that rule must have never had to deal with unruly upper brow hairs! There is nothing wrong at all with tweezing above your eyebrows. Women who have excess facial hair in this area can get relief from removing such hairs. Not only that, but properly removing hair from above the eyebrows can create better definition and shape overall. Too many stragglers above your eyebrows can cause the illusion of a funky shadow. If you want to take care of your brows yourself at home, simply use a white eye liner to lightly trace the natural shape of your eyebrows. Now look into the mirror closely. Any hairs that appear outside of the line you’ve drawn above your eyebrows should be removed. Be sure to use a good pair of tweezers. If there is too much hair to deal with or if you’re afraid of messing it up, seek the assistance of a professional.

When it comes to blush, many women stick to the age-old rule that blush is only supposed to be applied to the apples of your cheeks. This rule is mostly for women with oval face shapes. However, if you have a round, heart-shaped or square face shape, you can branch out. Round face shapes can try applying their blush along the cheekbones and using their brush to gently sweep the color up towards the temples. Heart-shaped faces should take their blush and start at the outer corners of the eyes and glide it up towards the temples. Women with square faces should apply their blush slightly under the cheekbones.

Probably one of the oldest makeup rules is to not wear lipstick without using a lip liner. As if! Not all lipstick shades look good with liner. It all really depends on the shade and type of lipstick being used. Creamy formulas tend to look more natural without the liner. Lip liner should be used with lipstick for colors that are darker or really bright. These types of lip color tend to spread over the lips, causing an undefined look. This is where lip liner comes in handy. However, if you’re using more natural or lighter shades of lip color, skip the liner and instead apply your lipstick with a lip brush.

Younger Looking Eyes

Younger looking eyes...

The first step is to reduce fine lines. So apply a little eye cream on the brow bone and under the eye.

Next dab on a concealer that matches your skin tones.

The last step is to line the eye with a white pencil just beneath the lash line. This will give the impression of larger and brighter eyes. :-)

Tweeze Your Brows

Which Tweezer?

Thin Tip: Good for grasping small, fine hairs, and plucking ingrown hair.
Slanted Tip: Gives maximum control.
Square Tip: Best used for removing coarse hairs or several hairs at a time.

1. Tweeze immediately after showering or apply a hot washcloth to loosen hair follicles.
2.Hold a pencil vertically along the side of the nose. Eyebrow should start at outside edge if pencil - Anastasia Soare eyebrow queen.
Hint: Leaving a bit more space will widen close-set eyes.
3.Hold pencil to outside of eye. This is where the eyebrow of a bombshell should end.
4.Smooth brows with a little moisturizer to help hairs slide out - turn back the clock.
5.Brush brows up to find a natural arch.
6. Draw in the desired shape beforehand with a soft eye shadow pencil - Keira Knightley smokey eyes.
Hint: Don't use an eyeliner pencil. It will cause you to pluck too much.
7.Tweeze under the brow first, plucking in the direction of the growth.
Hint: If your plucking becomes too painful, apply a little anbesol (yes, that pain reliever for teeth also numbs the brows)
8.Using an eyelash comb, comb brows upwards and trim any hairs that extend beyond the natural top or brow bone. Glamorous lashes.
9.After tweezing, soothe the area with cool, wet tea bags.

Beauty Rule!

The universal rule when it comes to using makeup is that less is more and layering is better. So blend and pat makeup onto different areas of your skin so the beauty of your skin can show through. When you're trying new things, just try one or two at a time. For instance, stick with neutral colors and buy a more vibrant lipstick or an eye shadow with more sparkle. And go for balance: if you're being dramatic on the eyes, go paler on the lips. ;)
